Alberobello  - Trulli Houses

Second day of classes went well.  I was with a different teacher and Michael from our group.  The teacher was Maria Doria.  She took me to a little cafe and got me a cold cappuccino freddo  -  100 % better than Starbucks...yum.

Every town in Italy has a day for "market."  Tuesdays are "market" day in Monopoli.  On our way to school this morning we walked through the outdoor market that went on for streets and streets.  They sell everything from clothes to shoes, kitchen items, ceramics, leather goods, food, household items....everything,

After school we got the bus to Alberobello, a small town about a 1/2 hour from Monopoli.  Alberobello is where the trulli houses are.  Trulli are cone-shaped roofed houses constructed with no cement or mortar...just limestone slabs built by hand.  The store behind the houses were that the people did not want to pay high taxes  so when the appraiser came to assess the house they would pull a piece of stone out and the house would fall and they would say:  I have no finished house, therefore, I shouldn't pay the high tax.  After the tax man leaves, they rebuild the house until the next assessment.

On top of the trulli are different shaped spires.  On the roof there are primitive symbols painted, for example:
The trident, which is the symbol of  Trinity.  Dove of the Holy Spirit.  Star of David.  Jewish Candlestick.  The holy tree which connects three worlds, hell, earth and heaven.  Radical Cross.  The Greek Letter
Omega.  The fish sign for Peace, and a few more.  If you would like to know more, Google Trulli in Alberobello.

We came back to the hotel for dinner and Rita (one of our host teachers) and her son, Alessandro, come to visit.  Alessandro speaks very deep and very slow...we told me he sounds just like Arnold Swartzeneugher (spl??)  Ethan, the youngest member of our team, wanted Alessandro to speak into this phone to make his ring tone saying:  Call me back.......but sounding like Arnold S when he says:  I'll be back.  Haha

This is Rita and her son...
